We specialize in Montana geology and sell various Montana geological publications and also list our publications on southwest Montana geology.

 Save Scenic Jefferson Valley Coalition

Concerned citizens are forming a coalition with the goal of protecting the scenic Jefferson Valley from the adverse and permanent impacts of the proposed Mountain States Transmission Intertie (MSTI) upon our irreplaceable land and landscape. If you would like to help protect greater Whitehall and the Jefferson Valley, please join us. We are also working closely with other area groups including Concerned Citizens of the Boulder Valley and Move MSTI of the Butte, Montana, area. Link to us at: www.savescenicJV.org or at our Save Scenic Jefferson Valley Coalition facebook page. Also check out the Concerned Citizens of the Boulder Valley web site and the Move MSTI web site.

TOPOGRAPHIC MAP READERS: Links for map reading and digital maps are provided on the Maps/Map Links page. Visit this page by clicking here.

CONTINENTAL SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY /UNCONFORMITIES: Information on continental sequence stratigraphic (css) research done by Whitehall Geogroup, Inc. workers is now listed on Earthmaps. Click here for the new css web page.

CONSERVATION EASEMENTS & MINERAL REMOTENESS TESTS: Conservation easements oftentimes require a "minerals remoteness test" as part of their baseline data. Our consulting company, Whitehall Geogroup, Inc., does these reports for various conservation organizations and private parties. Click here for more information on these reports.

UPDATED SALE LISTING OF USGS, AAPG, GSA AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS ON "GEOLOGY PUBLICATIONS FOR SALE PAGE".

EARTHMAPS ALSO OFFERS OTHER GEOLOGICALLY-BASED MEDIA  LINKS:

MINERAL & ROCK PHOTOGRAPHS/IDENTIFICATION KEYS

Earthmaps now offers sets of mineral and rock photographs.  Photo sets accompanied by identification keys for minerals, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks are also available.  The photos and photo/key sets are available on-line as a download from Glide Digital.  For more information go to our MINERAL AND ROCK PHOTO page.

SELF-GUIDED FIELD TRIPS

We are pleased to provide the service of self-guided geology field trips.  We offer both pre-compiled field trip guides and guides for custom designed field trips.  Our pre-compiled field trip guides are presently for areas in southwestern Montana. We currently offer two field trip guides:

Custom designed field trip guides can be provided for other areas of geologic interest.  Click here for more information:  Field Trip Details! . A vidcast of a "Geology Hike Through the Gallatin Petrified Forest, Southwestern Montana " is now available via a link on the Geo Postings blog site cited above.  Or you can just directly link to: Geopostings's Podcasts.

GEOTRAVELS

We are looking forward to the 2010 field season, and have a few suggestions for geotravels!  Currently, we provide links and information for Makoshika State Park in eastern Montana, and Bear Mountain State Park in the Hudson River Valley of New York on the Geotravels page.  Southwestern Montana stratigraphic sections, a U.S.G.S. geologic map database link, and Montana State Library NRIS map links are also listed on the Geotravels page.

MONTANA AND WHITEHALL GEOLOGY

Southwestern Montana Geology is our new geology virtual field trip!  This multimedia compact disc presentation takes the viewer through the valleys and mountains of southwestern Montana.  It also includes print-outs of stratigraphic columns, outcrop map locations, and suggested references. A great resource for southwestern Montana geology field camp participants. Click here for more information on this cd-rom.

We also stock the Whitehall Area Geology multimedia cd-rom.  Whitehall Area Geology is a virtual geological field trip that winds through southern Jefferson County, Montana.  It includes views, brief discussions, and map locations of rocks and sediments that span geologic time. Click here for more information about Whitehall Geology.

MAPS/MAP LINKS

Earthmaps offers map products in association with several organizations.  We have just added a link to myTopo.com so that our clients are able to custom build their own topographical map. Thus, you can now create custom-printed, waterproof, USGS topo maps that are then shipped to your door! Click on the "build your own map" icon below to customize your map.

K-12 RESOURCES

Earthmaps personnel have a special interest in K-12 earth science learning.  Consequently, our site hosts a web-based geology exercise and a learning resource page. We also appreciate any suggestions that you may have on further additions to our K-12 earth science resources.   Our web-based geology exercise focuses on igneous and sedimentary rocks, and was designed for elementary level science classes in Whitehall, Montana.  Although the photographs are specific to southwestern Montana, the learning exercise is applicable to all geographic localities.  Click here to have fun learning about rocks!

White River Group Equivalents in Montana

Debra L. Hanneman, Whitehall Geogroup, Inc., Whitehall, Montana 59759 and Charles J. Wideman, Professor Emeritus, Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Butte, Montana 59701

White River Group equivalents in Montana have previously been known by a plethora of lithostratgraphic names and were placed within the lower Renova Formation. More recently these units have been correctly identified as laterally equivalent basin deposits and are informally known as Cenozoic Sequence 2. Sequence 2 is bounded by regional unconformities and is age constrained by biostratigraphic and radiometric data. These data yield an age range of about 37 Ma to about 30 Ma for Sequence 2.

An oxic paleosol consistently marks the unconformity where Sequence 2 rests upon pre-Tertiary or Sequence 1 (about 55 Ma to about 43 Ma in age) rocks. Sequence 2 contains mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate, although the coarser-grained lithologies are typically lensoidal. Fluvial depositional systems dominate Sequence 2. The sandstones are typically ribbon sandstones suggesting a preponderance of fixed channel systems. Mudstone makes up as much as 80% of the Sequence 2 fluvial system rocks. Other minor depositional components of Sequence 2 include debris flow units that contain conglomerate lenses and some sheets, and lacustrine lenses of shale and carbonate. Calcic pedocomplexes typically cap the sequence where it occurs in mid-basin to basin-margin settings.

The hiatus between Sequence 2 and overlying sequences in some areas is only approximately 3 Ma, however, in many areas, it is often at least approximately 14 Ma. This is the real  “mid-Tertiary” unconformity, in that its maximum age is tied to the top of Sequence 2 at approximately 30 Ma. This mid-Tertiary unconformity is angular in a number of locations, but in some locations is simply a disconformity.
